Cash on Delivery of Parcel at Post Office

Stiff competition from private courier companies and rising trend of online business has influenced post services to be part of e-commerce and provide financial services to business houses, especially online companies. The postal department is now delivering parcels and collecting cash on delivery under its Business Parcel Service.

DELIVERY ACROSS INDIA
Under the new scheme, business parcel will offer a contractual service designed to suit requirement of business customers that will be economical and reliable.

To meet the requirement of bulk customers such as online shopping websites or for collection of amount for costlier goods, postal services now provide cash on delivery facility which provides collection of amount up to Rs 50,000 at the time of delivery of consignments. Delivery will be across India, but collection of funds by the entrepreneur can be done only from registered post offices.

“We deliver for e-commerce business houses and collect the money from the receiver, anywhere in India. The money is then collected and settled through e-payment which is required to create biller id of the company or entrepreneur. The collected cash will be finally deposited to the main account and cleared daily through cheque from the main account holding post office, though one can book a business parcel for delivery at any post office in the country,” said A R Shah, assistant superintendent at postal services in Gujarat. “We already have tied up with three companies in Gujarat despite starting the service just last week,” he added.

MINIMUM WEIGHT 2KGS
All parcels under the service will be delivered at your doorstep irrespective of its weight. Minimum chargeable weight for booking the consignments is two kilos while the maximum weight cannot exceed 35 kilos by the contractual customer. Insurance is not compulsory for business parcel consignments irrespective of their weight and value.

AVAILABLE TO PARCELS ONLY
“The cash on delivery facility is available to express parcel, business parcel and speed post customers, and the articles should not contain coupons, tickets, certificates or introductions designed for the sale of goods on what is known as the ‘snowball system’,” says Jagdish Suthar, deputy chief post master at general post office. In addition to the postage, insurance fee wherever levied, the sender will be required to pay the higher amount of the two per cent of the amount recovered or Rs 50 for up to Rs 5,000 to be recoverd from the addressee, and for above Rs 5,000 the higher of the Rs 100 or one per cent of exceeding amount of Rs 5,000.
